The Learning Commons (LC) Library at Sauk Valley Community College (SVCC) is pleased to announce some significant developments made possible through the My Library Is... Grant funds. These enhancements are aimed at improving branding, visibility, and overall awareness of the LC, which also includes the Tutoring Center and Writing Center.

A new window vinyl has been installed to clearly label the space as the LC, making it easier for students, employees, and community visitors to identify the location. This addition reinforces the commitment to creating a welcoming hub for learning and support. Previously, the LC, located on the third floor, presented a challenge for visibility; while our space is visible from lower levels, visitors could see only a blank expanse of windows from the 1st and 2nd floors, which did not distinguish the space. However, since the installation of the window vinyl, many visitors have been able to spot the library from lower levels, which has resulted in increased foot traffic to the library area.

In addition to the window vinyl, updated signage has been placed at each entryway to the LC. The new signage promotes the wide range of services available, ensuring that even when the campus is open outside of Library hours, everyone is informed about the resources available to them. We plan to use the remaining funds to purchase branded table covers that will be used to promote the LC at events on campus, such as our SaukFest event that occurs in both the Fall and Spring semesters.

Surveys that were completed as a part of the project in Fall of 2023 and again in Spring of 2024 gave insight into the services of the library that students and faculty are using. The top three most used Library services in Fall of 2023 were printing, reference desk, and computer lab. In comparison, the top three most used Library services in Spring of 2024 were printing, reference desk, and the library website. Out of the students who used library services in Fall of 2023 and Spring of 2024 the majority said they were satisfied or very satisfied with their experience using library services. We will continue to use this data to inform future LC choices in the upcoming semesters.

SVCC began recruiting students from our local district for our earned tuition program called the Impact Program in 2021. The updated branding efforts will allow new students to be able to connect with resources that the library provides for them. Other new populations that will be affected by the updated branding are the Police Academy, which was launched in 2023, and the Sonography program, which was added in 2024.

These grant funds play a crucial role in the success and growth of SVCC. These resources not only enhance our programs but also help us connect with the community. At the heart of the College is our mission: “Sauk Valley Community College is dedicated to teaching and scholarship while engaging the community in lifelong learning, public service, and economic development.” This mission drives everything we do and shapes how we use funds to make an impact.

We also take pride in our shared ethical values, which remind us that “Sauk Valley Community College respects the worth and dignity of all people; stands for integrity and fairness; and encourages responsibility, accountability, and persistence in a caring supportive environment.” These values guide our decisions and ensure the funds we receive are directed toward initiatives that truly matter.
